Far Star

Under the command of Captain Ed Laird

Former Prophet of the Fierce One

About the Far Star

Note: I am no longer currently active in TBG. This page is maintained for historical sake.

The Far Star left drydock on turn 273. While most records dating from that time have been lost the Far Star was primarily an independent adventurer, though for a time I was a member of FORT until its dissolution (the only formal membership in an alliance I've ever held).

After a vacation lasting several hundred turns, Far Star re-entered the galaxy on turn 1661. Since then, I've refocused my goals toward following the way of the Fierce One. While I embrace player-player trade and building mutually beneficial relationships with other Captains, I don't believe that a safe, predictable Galaxy is an interesting one. If you're paired with me and unsure of my intentions, hail me and ask – assuming that strangers mean you no harm is at best a dubious strategy.

The Fierce Way

To quote the former Fierce Prophet Tagnik'Zur, “The Fierce One loves battles. He rewards captains daring enough to fight and expose their precious ships to damage against other players.” I believe this is the very core of what it means to be Fierce: To take the risk of combat in order to reap its rewards. Conflict creates adventure. While there are many paths to advancement in the Galaxy and many definitions of success, the Fierce One celebrates those who choose to pursue their goals by force.

I replaced Tagnik'Zur as Prophet on turn 1791, and have been inspired by the principles he laid out. My Fierce Platform is closely related to his, and consists of three central tenets:

Honor

The Fierce One believes that combat enriches the Galaxy, and encourages it for this reason. However, while he appreciates destruction and the tactical value of cunning, he condemns actions that harm the Galaxy as a whole as dishonorable:

Dishonorable Captains are ineligible for the position of Chosen. At the discretion of the Prophet they may be pardoned (if suitable apologies/reparations are made), or branded Enemies of the Fierce One for repeat offenses.

Ferocity

The Fierce One loves all battles, especially when the combatants are equally matched or when the underdog is the aggressor. Battles will be evaluated according to the ranking system developed by Tagnik'Zur. Chosen of the Fierce One will be selected according to the ranking system every 10 turns.

Dedication

The Fierce One rewards combat with favor, and expects regular Praise from his Chosen and those followers who wish to become Chosen. Chosen will be expected to praise at least 4 times every 10 turns, and while there is no requirement for followers to praise, the more favor returned to the Fierce One's Prophet, the more Chosen he can appoint. Denouncing may be permitted in some cases (such as favor trades or young captains seeking enlightenment), but permission should always be requested, never assumed.

The Fierce Ranking System

The Fierce Ranking system was originally developed by Tagnik'Zur, and is directly based on fighting and winning battles. Battle score is determined based on the relative power indexes of the two ships and the number of modules shot off. Fierce Ranking score is based off battle score and time passed since each battle. Fierce Captains should continually seek out new conflict rather than rest on the laurels of past victories to maximize their Fierce ranking.

How are Battle and Fierce Ranking scores calculated?

Battle and Fierce Ranking score depend on the relative sizes of the two ships. For all calculations, these variables apply:

rA
=
Ship A's raw score (PI shot off ship B)
rB
=
Ship B's raw score (PI shot off ship A)
pA
=
Ship A's power index
pB
=
Ship B's power index
wA
=
Ship A's Battle score (only for victor)
wB
=
Ship B's Battle score (only for victor)
fA
=
Ship A's Fierce Ranking (only for victor)
fB
=
Ship B's Fierce Ranking (only for victor)

All battles in which the smaller ship's PI is at least 8027777777631f the larger, all challenges, all battles in which both ships are in the top20, all battles in which the smaller ship (but still at least 80%) attacks first. These battles are considered Fierce:

wA = rA * ( ( pB/( pA^2 ) ) * 100 )

wB = rB * ( ( pA/( pB^2 ) ) * 100 )

fA = wA * ( 1 - ( ( Current Turn nr - Battle Turn nr ) / 100 ) )

fB = wB * ( 1 - ( ( Current Turn nr - Battle Turn nr ) / 100 ) )

Note that only the winner gains Battle score/Fierce Ranking, though both ships gain a battle fought.

All battles in which the smaller ship's PI is less than 80452f the larger, not challenges, not top20 have the winner's Battle score doubled if the smaller ship wins and halved if the smaller ship loses. If the smaller ship wins, the battle is considered Fierce, if the larger ship wins the battle is not considered Fierce.

Decay of Fierce Ranking points for these battles is different than ordinary Fierce battles. If smaller ship A defeats larger ship B, ship A's Fierce Ranking is calculated as fA = wA * ( 1 - ( ( Current Turn nr - Battle Turn nr ) / 150 ) ), meaning the points from this impressive victory decay more slowly. Conversely if a larger ship A defeats a smaller ship B, ship A's Fierce Ranking is calculated as fA = wA * ( 1 - ( ( Current Turn nr - Battle Turn nr ) / 50 ) ), decaying more quickly as the Fierce One is less than impressed by such an almost-guaranteed victory.
