Welcome About UPF Rules FAQ |
Welcome to the Space BeagleGreetings fellow captains. If you are meeting with me, please read this section. I declare that I am helpful to everyone I meet. Feel free to contact me at space_beagle_tbg@yahoo.com if there is any way I can help you. Is there an adventure you would to do here? Are you interested in some other action limited to one ship, perhaps? Is there a module you would like to trade for? Would you like to know where the nearest low level adventure is? Just drop me a line. I am an explorer at heart, and enjoy sharing what information I have. I believe in cooperation and fairness. I do not have a lot of tolerance for bullies, pirates, or Dybuk releasers. I believe in using violence only as a last resort.
Just so you know, I don't check the anonymous messages very often, so even if you sent an anonymous message already, go ahead and contact me using the above address. AboutSo where did the name "Space Beagle" come from anyway? Is it some reference to Snoopy in a space suit? No. The name is a reference to the book The Voyage of the SPACE BEAGLE by A. E. van Vogt. The book is about the adventures of a space ship on a five-year mission of exploration, and is named in reference to the HMS Beagle and it's voyage of exploration. The book was written in the 1940's, and they have adventures later retold in such movies as Alien and Forbidden Planet. I should mention that this was not the only source for the movie Alien. UPFMost of the policies of the so-called Universal Police Force (UPF) are reasonable enough. Rules against terminal purging and Dybuk releasing and Piracy are common to just about every ship or group of ships that posts rules. I take exception, however, to the rule against the transport of certain goods classified as contraband by alien races. Let's look at the many things wrong with the policy of outlawing contraband tradegoods. First off, there is no basis for it. All of the other rules mentioned above follow from the simple rule: do no harm to your fellow captain. Trading contraband does not harm other captains, or anyone else. Much harm is done, though, in enforcing this rule. If an alien government catches a captain selling contraband to one of its colonies, that captain is made an enemy of that government. That's the only distinction between trading contraband and other trade goods. Someone may try to argue that this declaration is an indication that some harm has been done. However, if the UPF were truly interested in preventing anyone from becoming or staying enemies of the alien races, then surely they would outlaw other ways of becoming enemies, ways such as intimidating alien governments? They don't outlaw any other ways of becoming enemies and they in fact are listed as enemies by many, many alien governments themselves. The only effect of the "no-contraband" policy is to restrict the growth of ships. Ships that are not as large as Constitution, Borg Prime, or Wolverine need money to grow their ships. Transporting trade goods is an effective way to earn that money. Ships seeking to earn money, but wishing to avoid belligerent ships several times their size will switch over to other avenues for making money. Those other avenues all pay less to each ship when more ships attempt them. This means that any ship looking to make money is restricted in it's ability to earn money by the "no-contraband" policy, even those ships not interested in shipping contraband. This policy is only an excuse for bullying and piracy. Until the UPF changes this policy, and it's practice of attacking ships for violating this policy, or attacking for no good reason as Borg Prime has done, they will find me an outspoken opponent of theirs. Frequently Asked QuestionsOK, maybe it's just me that asks them, but after reading the rules and playing a while, I realized there were lots of areas the rules did not go into great detail. That's fine, I like exploring. If you do too, you may want to go back to the top so I don't spoil any surprises for you. As I come up with questions and answers, I'll put them here. |
